Downtown Bolinas was hopping on Saturday, January 24th. Interesting art (painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video) was happening at the Bolinas Museum. And beautiful people (old, young and in between; but mostly of the cool kid skater surfer variety) were everywhere, the day was summery, the beach was packed, and the surf was good. It kind of, sort of, appeared to look like a hipster Woodstock was happening in Bolinas. A lot of people were meandering about town, kids were stealthily catching tail gate car rides on their skateboards, drivers trolled for parking, locals were out watching the tourists and the tourists were watching for locals.
The museum was crowded. A LOT of people came to see the triple bill exhibition of Thomas Campbell, Brian Gaberman, and local artist Charlie Callahan. The artist’s are allied with local, national, and international surf/skate scenes and this was clearly reflected in the crowd.
The museum also held a nighttime after-party at the Bolinas Community Center, which was a big scene too. Three rock’n bands were featured: Fantasy Bracelet (an impromptu local outfit), Tommy Guerro's band, and the Sandy’s. Unfortunately, my camera ran out of electrical/digital juice before nightfall so I don't have any photo's of the scene, but I'm happy to report the downtown festival vibe kept on long after sunset. A long line formed outside the little community center and the place eventually reached full capacity. Like I said it was rock’n! And once inside the vibe was just like that of a dark music venue in the city: standing room only, guys with guitars jamming on stage, a psychedelic light show oozing, flittering and gyrating behind them.
In short, it was a fantastic day (and night) of art, music, people watching, beach cruising, and sun worshipping in downtown Bolinas.
